In 2005, my darling Mo introduced me to a show that was on television in the 90s called 'Key West'! It was wonderful and as a result I was ready to visit the island when a few months later he took me to see the real deal (in February when it was snowing here in Denver). Needless to say, I fell in love!

But Key West is more than a vacation resort or even an island at the end of the Keys in Florida: It is magic and wonder and innocence and wantonness all rolled into one. In Key West "there are angels in the spray, wizards in the palm trees, and elves in the seashells and they all look very favorably on struggling young writers."* And one hopes, the not so young (like me!).

Although I reside in the Mile-High city in my "real" life there is the home of my heart... the End of the World, the Land beyond Time, Key West. Key West became, for me, the Place of my imagination. The location where "things" happen that can't really be accounted for and seem beyond explanation.

It is my hope that amidst the incarnate you will see some of the ineffable. Hope you enjoy!

Ending the first day

Reactions:
Life is full of firsts-- your first steps, first words, first bicycle. There is wonder that fills those moments-- I recall watching my first child take her first steps, say "mama" for the first time...
as I brush those moments in memory my eyes brim with the uniqueness of the occasion but can never recapture them. They are butterfly moments, quickly fleeting in their occurence and recollected only in far off  fields of Forget-me-Nots brought briefly back to life with a smell, a flavor.

New Year's day is a unique opportunity to embrace the Today as a first. Did you smile when you made love for the first time this morning? Did you enjoy the first message of "Happy New Year" from your children? Did you treasure the first breath you took in this first day, the first sunset?
This day is a day to cherish firsts.
What firsts did you stow in your memory banks for the future?

*Emily at Keeping Time stirred my thoughts on firsts with her lovely post on Japanese traditions for New Year's day. Wonderful pics accompanied the post so I encourage you to go say "hi."

  2. Until we moved to Japan, I'd never really thought about treasuring each new first of the New Year, but I love the idea and I've tried to make that my focus this year, too.

This was a lovely post, and thanks for the link-love! I'm honored! :)

    Happy New Year!

  3. I like the idea of cherishing each new first. Seeing the world with a child's wonder. That is so easy to lose in the hustle and bustle of life.

    Nice post, wonderful pictures.

  4. Right at this moment, I am cherishing my first night in my new apartment...sitting on the mattress on the beautiful hardwood floor, listening to music, drained from the move today but finally relaxing, surrounded by boxes and bags.. A new beginning, once again.

Happy New Year to you Danette,
    xo

Emily: Glad you enjoyed the post and thanks so much for the inspiration.

Judie: It is a great way to address life, isn't it?

Zella: Congratulations on moving in to your new place! I don't know if it will help you at all but it does me when I am in that dark place and feel there is nowhere to go, hanging on to the memory of those moments of bliss helps you get through the darkness. Not to say that we should be happy for the ugliness in life but there is a the paradox is that the dark moments help us to cherish the good.

    Michael: Go, man Go!

I don't think I did any firsts, but I spent it with my family, which was awesome.

  13. Glorious pictures. Great post theme. I guess blogging is full of firsts. The first post, the first commenter, the first follower, the first blog award, the first blogfest, the first winning challenge badge and blog prize.
    Happy New Year.
